However, despite many years of research, neither autoimmune activation nor antibodies against the orexin system have been found in narcoleptic patients. This strong HLA allele association, along with other epidemiological characters such as adolescence onset and genetic predisposition, led to the belief that an autoimmune-mediated mechanism is the most probable etiology for narcolepsy. HLA genes (also known as human major histocompatibility complex genes, MHC) are essential for antigen processing by the immune system and many HLA alleles are biomarkers of autoimmune diseases. The majority (90%) of narcoleptic patients with cataplexy are positive for a specific class II human leukocyte antigen (HLA) allele, HLA-DQB1*0602, compared to about 30% of the general population. It is now generally accepted that narcolepsy is most likely caused by a loss of orexin neurons in the hypothalamus in genetically susceptible individuals with detrimental environmental exposure. On the other hand, a pair of monozygotic twins was found to be discordant for narcolepsy, suggesting a strong environmental influence. The prevalence of narcolepsy is 10 times higher among first-degree relatives than in the general population, indicating this disorder has a genetic predisposition. Narcolepsy is a debilitating sleep disorder that affects approximately 0.05% of the general population, with most cases first appearing during adolescence. These models have helped elucidate the pathophysiology of narcolepsy and develop more effective treatment of this disease. A summary of these findings is provided in Table 1. In this review, we will discuss narcolepsy in animals, especially various canine and rodent models of narcolepsy. Since then, multiple genetically engineered rodent models of narcolepsy have become available. Subsequently, it was found that a deficiency of the orexin system plays a key role in narcolepsy. Two isoforms of orexins (orexin-A and-B, or hypocretin-1 and hypocretin-2) are derived from proteolytic cleavage of a precursor peptide (preproorexin, or preprohypocretin) and exert their actions through two types of G-protein-coupled receptors (OxR1 and OxR2, or Hctr1 and Hctr2). Orexins are peptides that are produced mainly in the perifornical region of the hypothalamus (PFH). In 1998, orexins (also known as hypocretins) and their receptors were discovered. In the 1970s, though, a canine model of narcolepsy was established. Although narcolepsy symptoms were first described by the German psychiatrist Carl Friedrich Otto Westphal in 1877 and the French word narcolepsie was coined in 1880 by the physician Jean-Baptiste-Édouard Gélineau, an animal model of this disease did not become available for almost a century.

Raisa said she thinks it's "super important" nowadays to highlight interracial relationships, which the show did. "And just tell more stories that you don't always get to hear." "The show did a good job at showing different characters that were diverse and from different walks of life, so I would like to see more of those stories from people of color, people that come from a different place, and exploring how all of these people come together and how they mesh," she said. Winbush said she wanted to see more diversity. Did we? So I think that that would be something that I would want to see explored." But I don't think that we had any characters that were trans. Ringwald said, "The show was bold in terms of talking about sexuality. If I had to go to school right now as a teenager, I'd be really worried about getting shot in my own classroom." "If this were to be a show about American teenagers in school, that's something that would scare the s-t out of me every day. "Something that would be important for me would be gun violence in schools," Park said. The cast was also asked what they thought was the most important top that The Secret Life of the American Teenager would address, were it remade today. Since you will undoubtedly be given statistical information at some point in your life, you need to know some techniques for analyzing the information thoughtfully. Descriptive statistics including work on measures of location. With this information, you may make a decision about the correctness of a statement, claim, or "fact." Statistical methods can help you make the "best educated guess." Typically, when you read a newspaper article or watch a television news program, you are given sample information. Descriptive statistics are useful because they allow you to understand a group of data much more quickly and easily compared to just staring at rows and rows of raw data values. There are statistics about crime, sports, education, politics, and real estate. You are probably asking yourself the question, "When and where will I use statistics?" If you read any newspaper, watch television, or use the Internet, you will see statistical information. To execute basic queries with PHP and retrieve data from the PostgreSQL database, you need to use the pg_query() function. Finally, use the pg_free_result() function to free the memory used by the result object. You can use the pg_fetch_assoc() function to fetch each row of data from the result object and process it. The pg_query() function takes the connection object and the SQL query as parameters and returns a result object. For example, to retrieve all records from a table named albums, you can use the following code: $result = pg_query($conn, "SELECT * FROM albums") Once you have established a connection to the database, you can execute SQL queries using the pg_query() function. Replace localhost with the hostname or IP address of the PostgreSQL server, 5432 with the port number of the PostgreSQL server, jazz_music with the name of the database you created, jazz_user with the name of the user you created, and your_password with the password you set for the user. For example: $conn = pg_connect("host=localhost port=5432 dbname=jazz_music user=jazz_user password=your_password") The connection string specifies the host, port, database name, user, and password. To connect to PostgreSQL, you can use the pg_connect() function, which takes a connection string as a parameter. Here’s how you can connect to PostgreSQL from PHP and execute basic queries to retrieve data from the jazz_music database: To connect to PostgreSQL from PHP, you need to use the PostgreSQL extension for PHP, which provides a set of functions to interact with PostgreSQL databases. In the next section, we will learn how to connect to PostgreSQL from PHP and execute basic queries to retrieve data from the database. Now, you have created a database and a user to access it. Grant all privileges to the user for the jazz_music database using the following SQL command: GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON DATABASE jazz_music TO jazz_user įinally, connect to the jazz_music database as the jazz_user user using the following command: \c jazz_music jazz_user To do this, execute the following SQL command: CREATE USER jazz_user WITH PASSWORD 'your_password' Next, create a user named jazz_user with a password of your choice. Then, execute the following SQL command to create a database named jazz_music: CREATE DATABASE jazz_music To create a database for storing jazz music data, log in to PostgreSQL as the default superuser postgres. To connect to PostgreSQL from PHP, you first need to create a database and a user with appropriate permissions. Once you have installed PostgreSQL and PHP, you can move on to creating a PostgreSQL database and user.
In 1968, Apollo 8 astronauts took Silly Putty to lunar orbit with them in a specially crafted sterling-silver egg. Fleckner, he chose to include Silly Putty because it’s “a case study of invention, business and entrepreneurship, and longevity." 9. Silly Putty became as historically relevant as Judy Garland’s iconic ruby slippers after a sampling of the brand’s products were added to the National Museum of American History’s permanent collections. Sadly, this is no longer the case today’s newspapers are printed using nontransferable ink. 7. IT ONCE LIFTED INK OFF NEWSPRINT.īefore Photoshop, crafty kids could digitally manipulate and distort images by placing Silly Putty over newspaper, lifting it off, and transferring the ink onto a new surface. Hit it with a hammer and it keeps its shape. Throw it from a roof and it shatters into pieces. SILLY PUTTY IS A "LIQUID SOLID."ĭrop a ball of Silly Putty and it bounces. SILLY PUTTY IS NOW OWNED BY THE COMPANY THAT MAKES CRAYOLA CRAYONS.īinney & Smith-the Easton, Penn.-based company that invented the now-eponymous Crayola crayon-purchased Silly Putty a year after Hodgson’s death. Business suffered, but sales picked up once the fighting ended. 4. SILLY PUTTY PRODUCTION WAS HALTED DURING THE KOREAN WAR.Ī restriction on silicone during the Korean War meant that Hodgson had to stop making Silly Putty for a few years. Today, it would be worth close to $590 million. The strategy paid off when Hodgson died in 1976, his estate was worth $140 million. Hodgson created a TV ad campaign for Silly Putty that’s today credited as one of the first commercials for kids. Thanks to the New Yorker, Hodgson received more than 250,000 orders in three days.īut Silly Putty really took off once the savvy marketing man identified a more lucrative customer base: children. Still, buyers at Neiman-Marcus and Doubleday bookstores picked it up, and before long, the novelty item had received a shout-out in the New Yorker’s “Talk of the Town” section. Silly Putty wasn’t a hit at the 1950 International Toy Fair. SILLY PUTTY WAS FIRST MARKETED TOWARD ADULTS. Spring was arriving, Hodgson needed a promotional hook, and what would sell a new toy better than a commercial holiday like Easter? 3. But it wasn’t just whimsy that drove Hodgson to package Silly Putty in plastic eggs-it was also timing. Hodgson decided to re-name the goo “Silly Putty” and sell it on his own. 2. SILLY PUTTY WAS PACKED IN PLASTIC EGGS BECAUSE IT WAS EASTER. However, a marketing consultant named Peter Hodgson was more than happy to take it off her hands. Eventually, she lost interest in the product. But the substance tended to melt, and it couldn’t hold a solid shape.Ī toy store owner named Ruth Fallgatter caught wind of the goo and decided to carry it in her New Haven, Conn. He noticed that the compound polymerized to form a resilient, flexible material that was almost like rubber. In 1943, the chemical engineer for General Electric added a bit of boric acid to silicon oil. James Wright-the man who's most commonly credited for Silly Putty's invention-came close. During World War II, the government asked chemists to search for a synthetic rubber substitute. Several individuals claim to have invented Silly Putty, but no matter who's claiming the title of inventor, the underlying story's the same: It was definitely created by accident. Here are 15 facts about Silly Putty that prove it’s a true product of American ingenuity-not just a petty plaything. However, the ooey-gooey substance isn’t just for kids. Silly Putty is one of the top-selling children’s toys of all time. He debuted as an actor in the horror movie The Newlydeads in 1988 and dedicated himself to his acting role throughout the 1990s, appearing in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, produced in 199, and in Disney’s Halloween special Hocus Pocus, also released in 1993. In 1985 he moved to Los Angeles, California, where he pursued his acting career full-time. This performance laid the foundation for his unique film career. He took the mascot of his school, “Charlie Cardinal”, to a whole new level, better than the previous mascot who did nothing but flap his arms. In addition to his lanky figure and easy dislocation skills, Doug continued to train to ensure his success as a mime artist. At university, Doug majored in telecommunications and minored in drama. His father, Robert Jones, was a former teacher and self-educated entrepreneur, while his mother, Fifi Jones, was a housewife who faced the grueling task of raising her four boys after her husband’s death.Ī glance at his educational background reveals that Doug, who is better known to friends and family as “Dougie”, attended Bishop Chatard High School before moving to Ball State University, where he began performing as a mime at the age of 16. The youngest of four brothers, Doug Jones was born on May 24, 1960, in Indianapolis, Indiana, and grew up in the northeast of the city where he began to play pantomime. His most recent role, however, is the fishy amphibian man in Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water. He often wears heavy make-up to play non-human characters, as in Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and Hellboy II: The Golden Army, produced in 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008 respectively. Many folkloric scholars have drawn attention to the fact that the Tree of Life is, in actuality, one of several fascinating deviations that come from a vaster and more generalized “sacred tree” trope. Taking this into account, it’s little wonder that trees have for so long been viewed as synonymous with the essence of life itself. In many belief systems, the significance of the tree lies not only with the growth itself, but the ecosystem it provides for protected creatures or unseen spirits held in high regard, such as rare insects or forest sprites. Shedding their leaves in the winter months and bursting forth with verdant new growth in the summer, deciduous trees are frequently used in art to represent rebirth and hope, whereas coniferous trees, with their stubborn sameness than carries them through year after year, are often associated with longevity and resilience of spirit. Gustav Klimt's 1909 painting "The Tree of Life." The Tree of Life symbol has been used and adapted by just about every culture. As such, trees have been given powerful and deeply sacred meanings by countless different peoples over the course of history. There are few places on earth that one could imagine traveling to without encountering a tree native to that soil, be it a majestic oak or a powerful, bristling palm. But where, we come to wonder, did this striking symbol first stem from, and when?įirstly, we recognize that it is impossible to discuss the global nature of the Tree of Life without noting (if somewhat redundantly) the ubiquitous nature of trees in our world. It appears on clothing and jewelry, is used as a narrative device in literature and film (taken both metaphorically and literally in equal measure), and brings a sense of stability and power to those who invoke the Tree when in need. Unbroken band which represents eternity, the Tree of Life is as popular today as it has ever been. Often depicted as a deep-rooted, broad-crowned tree encircled by an Thanks to the seeds that are distributed in its fruit, the tree can never truly die, and so it is fitting that one of the most prominent symbols from old Celtic traditions-and, in truth, the traditions of the populated world at large-is the Tree of Life, an image that has been closely associated with immortality and abundance since ancient times. There are few natural symbols out there that are so rich and diverse as that of the tree, representative (at least on one level) of the never-ending cycle of existence, as well as the ups and downs of life that come along with it.
